Green shallots, batard of white bread, a whole chicken (Silver Barred variety) for Thanksgiving, apples, pears, and a pain au chocolate on Saturday at the farmer's market. Purple sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, carrots, two dozen large eggs, an empanada, a red chard plant, milk, cream, and bell pepper quark at the market on Sunday.
I went to the Crafty Bastards fair yesterday, which was huge, crowded, and lots of fun. Picked up a brown courdaroy newsboy hat, a skein of yarn from Folktale Fibers that should make a scarf that transitions through 32 colors, and yarn from Looped Yarn Works for a one-ball cowl in a cinnamon brown that will be very useful once winter actually sets in.
I looked at several bag makers for a knitting bag -- my backpack is great but too big, elephant purse is cute and holds my Kindle perfectly only holds a ball at most, so I'm looking for something on the order of medium messenger bag with internal pockets and a latch. Fabric Horse has a waxed canvas tote which might work, though I'd want the straps to be about 3 inches longer -- I want totes to sit on my hip, not under my armpit. Milk & Honey Handbags had a lovely messenger bag with a pocket in the flap that might work, though I'd worry about the durability of the vegan suede. New Leaf Works has messenger bags made out of high-quality upholstery vinyl, so they'd be easy to clean and fairly durable, but by the time I got there, all of the pieces out were grey -- if they can do other colors, their messenger bag was really nice, and I did like their aesthetics a lot.
I also talked to the guy at House of Reboot, and they can custom fit their shirts and outerwear if I give them my measurements (and money), so that might be something to keep in mind.
I couldn't even get into the Alternate Histories booth, it was so crowded, but looking at their etsy site, I have several possible gifts for various friends, and probably a wonderful set of Christmas cards for family if I want them.
Rebound Designs had book purses, and book e-reader covers that were awfully nice. I didn't buy anything, because book purses are a fairly specific item, and to give one as a gift you have to be certain of your giftee's tastes in purses and books.
Cutesy But Not Cutesy had adorable monster hoodies that I am keeping my eye on -- tiny relatives might get monster hoodies this year, or next...
Since the fair was in front of Union Market, I went in to see what's what; the building is a bit of urban renewal, with artisan food producers having booth in a building that's in the middle of the somewhat rundown wholesaling neighborhood.
I did a circuit of the entire building and was quite interested in spite of the bumper to bumber crowds from the fair. Buffalo and Bergen has very nice soda -- I had a chocolate float -- pnd I hope to try them again when they're not being slammed by business so I can see what they're knishes are like. DC Mobile Sharpening were confidant they can handle my ulu, so I'll bring it by after Thanksgiving. All Things Olive had some fantastically tasty oils, so I bought the one on special to see what it will do in my White Bead Spread. Harvey's Market not only had pig legs with trotters attached, but a pig's head in the case, so it's a serious butcher and I will buy from them soon; they are supposed to have rabbit, and if so, I will make hasenpfeffer soon.
Lastly, I picked up bacon (which will be turned into Candied Bacon Ice Cream) and biroldo sausage from http://www.redapronbutchery.com/, a local firm that does charcuterie for some of the local high-end restaurants. The biraldo I bought after being giving a freshly seared piece -- it's fastastically flavorful, with a texture that's similar to but not as meal as, liverwurst. I'm thinking of buying and freezing one to take home for the holidays, as texasgrandpa likes blutwurst...
texasgrandma will just have to put up with our weird food preferences. I'm definitely serving it as a starter for Thanksgiving -- probably seared on baguette slices with a bit of mustard.
Basically, it's an excellent place to go for a bit of foodie tourism.
Today though, I am making Chestnut Ice Cream. And looking through the Blackbird Bakery Gluten-Free cookbook I just bought, because it looks like I will be having a gluten-free Thanksgiving.
