crafty_packrat: Shiny Disco socks (sock-knitting)
I've been working on Changeling socks for a few weeks now, and frankly, I'm going to have to give up on the heels as written, frog them back to heel beginning, and do them over as short-row heels.

Why? -- because the heels as written have a lot of fabric bunching up on the top of my foot while the fabric stretches tight around my heel on the other side. That's not how socks should fit, especially if they're hand knit and made to measure.

The socks won't be quite as spiffy as they'd be done exactly to the pattern, but they'll fit better.

I'm also tempted to knit the Bigger on the Inside shawl for Con.txt -- it'd probably sell well at the charity auction, but the starting price would be a bit high, given that it is made from 2 skeins of Lorna's Laces Solamente in a custom colorway...

The heel modifications seem to have worked on the Koi socks I'm working on. I anticipate being finished with the first sock sometime this week.

the sock heel problem. Now I just need to try it on to make sure the modified short row heel fits.

I missed a turn on my short row heels, and now have to unravel them at least back to the halfway point.

To make it worse, I only have the energy to do a lot of knitting in the mornings right now, so it'll probably take all of tomorrow's ride to work to get them back to where I was two days ago. :P

I've reached the heel on my Goldfish socks, and I'm going to modify it by knitting the short row heel over 30 stitches instead of 24. The pattern as written just doesn't work for larger feet.

So let's hope I've got the math right and it works out in the end...

I finished the heel on [personal profile] mrshamill's sock this afternoon. I'd forgotten how *square* the heel comes out with this pattern -- possibly because it was translated out of German, and that's the preferred heel there?

Square heel is square! )

I also used the eye-of-partridge stitch to give the heel some extra firmness.

Only a couple of more days, and the first sock will be done

I've gotten past the 'forethought' heels on the Chevron socks I'm been knitting. I doubt I'll use this pattern again, because I'm really don't like how afterthought heels fit my actually heels. And this particular pattern is turning out quite a bit tighter than I like, so I've decided that these socks are going to be a gift for a friend who has rather smaller feet that I do.

On the other hand, the socks are turning out pretty )

I might use the chevron pattern again, possibly with a heavier yarn -- it'd make for some nice house-socks.

I finally tried the forethought heels (aka in-place afterthought heels) for my Chevron/self-striping socks from Sensational Knitted Socks.

I don't like it -- this is the second time I've tried an afterthought heel, and I'm not even finished with this attempt, and I can tell I'll never use this technique again if I can help it.

I didn't like how sloppy it left the heel the first time I tried it, and this time it's almost impossible to knit two sock on two circs (my preferred method of sock knitting) and do this heel.

Next time, I'm substituting a short-row heel, or a half-hankercheif, or even a round heel -- this is just too much trouble for too little a result.
