Farmer's Market -- 25 Aug 12
Aug. 25th, 2012 11:49 amFigs, tomatoes, feta cheese, boneless pork shoulder (for chili verde), watermelon, pain au chocolate, and framboisine.
I made have found someone who can repair my 1950's modernist copper bracelet! yay!
Also, Washington Garnder magazine was at the market this week, and they were holding a tomato tasting -- I liked the Green Zebra today -- and giving away free packets of tomato seeds (Abraham Lincoln cultivar). I asked for advice, and the peony I got last week is apparantly normal for the area this time of year -- powdery mildew is common. The suggestion is that I wait another month, then cut the stems to the ground and let it overwinter. To get rid of the 8 square feet of mint in the flowerbeds, I should lay cardboard over it and then cover that with a thick layer of compost -- that will deprive the mint of light and yet the cardboard will degrade over the winter.
I'm also looking to get to the local gardening mecca and picking up the most compact composter I can find, a garden fork, a spade, a bottle of Neptune's Harvest fish fertilizer, composter/dirt/mulch to enrich the flowerbed.
