crafty_packrat: Handspindles are a go! (spinning)
I got my replacement driveband for my wheel today (the first of the two I ordered)! So I'm back to spinning!

Woot!

I went to see The Greeks at the National Geographic Museum yesterday with [personal profile] ellen_fremedon, [personal profile] greenygal, and the Vegan Knitter.

It's only through Oct 10, so I suggest you go if you can.

It's amazing! It starts with Cycladic figurines and goes all the way to Alexander the Great. There are a lot of piece that have never before left Greece -- some of them very famous!

My favorite section was the 'Age of Agemmenon' -- artifacts from Mycenaean shaft graves, including gold death masks, boar-tusk helmets, and early swords. There were also a few female burials of high status women, with lots of bronze ornaments and occasional gold rings.

There was also a charming animation demonstrating how jury selection worked in classical Athens -- they had a machine they used to make the lottery random. There was also a small display of ostracons, some of them very historic indeed.

The museum suggest two hours to go through the exhibit, but if you're the kind to read all the placards, watch all the videos, and then try to identify the gods and heroes on all the pottery, it's more like four.
